“When you see an opportunity… run with it!”

August 2021—On a warm Monday morning, I was doing what I always do—browsing the MLS—when I came across two lots that immediately caught my attention. They were full of character: a Fontana address, taxed by Linn Township, and zoned by the Village of Fontana. The more I thought about them throughout the day, the more I saw the potential.

By Tuesday morning, I knew—I had to make them mine. As a Real Estate Agent, I submitted an offer (below asking, of course). The seller countered, I countered back, and by Thursday morning, I was officially under contract to close in just three weeks!

One day, I plan to build a charming little home here. (3 years later.. updates below) As a recent college grad, this land is more than just an investment—it’s a stepping stone toward my dream. If you’re diving into the real estate market, trust your instincts, ask questions, and be ready to seize the right opportunity when it comes your way.
These “little lots” have grown into my big dream, and I can’t wait to share the journey with you!

My Home Building Journey

Finally Settled 🤍

October 29, 2025

It’s wild to say this, but we finally feel settled.

What once felt like a construction project now feels completely, undeniably like home. The boxes are unpacked, the walls have personality, and every room carries little pieces of us.

I started this journey in 2021 — all by myself. Back then, this house was just an idea and a whole lot of determination. There were big decisions made alone and moments where I simply had to trust the vision.

And then 2025 became the year I said yes to more. The year I fell in love with my best friend. It’s crazy to think that Ethan and I now get to share this beautiful space together — a home that began as a solo dream and has turned into something even sweeter than I imagined.
This month we celebrated Ethan’s 30th birthday here at home. I decorated the living room for him with big gold “30” balloons and made it special just for us. Seeing him sit there with Scout on his lap, smiling in a space that means so much to both of us, was one of those quiet, core-memory moments. No big party — just us, in our home, celebrating a milestone.

Scout is still absolutely thriving here. She has claimed every cozy corner imaginable — the chairs by the windows, the couch, and somehow even the hard table in the living room (which she has decided is, in fact, a bed). She loves putting her paws up on the lower windows to watch the trees and keep an eye on the world outside. It’s her house now — we just live in it.

We’ve been adding more personalized touches too — hanging meaningful pieces, finding homes for special décor, layering in the details that make it feel uniquely ours. Scout’s sister, CJ, came to visit and immediately approved. The two of them spent their time watching out the windows and soaking in the views like they’d been here forever.

It’s amazing. Truly.

A vision in 2021.
A house in 2025.
A home we get to share.

Life has unfolded in the sweetest way. 🤍

I'll post on here in the coming months and years with more updates... but for now, thank you. Thank you to everyone, especially my parents for supporting and encouraging me throughout this entire journey.

Sincerely, the girl with a wild imagination and dreams -- Ally

Finally Home

August 2, 2025

Move-in day. 🤍

After all the months of planning, decisions, delays, dust, and dreaming… I am finally living in!!

Walking in knowing I wasn’t just “checking progress” but actually staying felt surreal. It’s been such a journey to get here, and while I know it will take a few months to feel fully settled, I’m just so happy.

Ethan made the day even more special by bringing me the most beautiful flowers for my first day moving in. And my green couch — the one I ordered almost a year ago — finally arrived. Seeing it in the living room made everything come together. It’s bold but cozy, and it fits the space exactly how I imagined. After waiting so long for it, having it here feels like a final piece clicking into place.

Scout has already claimed the house as her own. She has little “Scout spots” everywhere. She especially loves putting her paws up on the lower windows to look outside — keeping watch, of course. Watching her explore each room has been one of my favorite parts of moving in.

This house has been such a journey. There were moments it felt endless, moments I questioned decisions, and moments I just wanted it done. But standing here now, surrounded by flowers, my green couch, and a very happy pup, it all feels worth it.

I’m home.

And while I know it will take time to feel fully settled, my heart already is. 🤍

From one happy lady--Ally.

Elle Woods: A Love Story That Looks a Little Different

When I started this blog, the name Elle Woods just made sense

Not because of the movie — but because of my Elle.

I got her in 2019 while I was still living at home with my parents. From day one, she had a presence about her. Confident. Observant. Completely sure the world revolved around her (and honestly… it kind of did).

Every day when I left for work, Elle stayed home with my mom, who is retired. What started as daytime company quickly turned into a full-time bond. Morning routines. Midday sun spots. Backyard patrol. Snack negotiations. Elle became my mom’s shadow — and my parents’ house became her kingdom.

Building a Home With Her Name On It
As I was building my house, naming it Elle Woods felt symbolic. She had been my constant through so much growth. It felt right that this new chapter carried her name.

The plan was always that Elle would move with me.

But as move-in got closer, I had to be honest with myself.

Elle wasn’t just comfortable at my parents’ house — she was thriving. She had companionship all day. She had routine. She had territory. She had people who were home with her constantly.

Moving her would have been about me wanting everything to line up neatly.

Loving her meant asking: Where is she happiest?

And the answer was obvious.

The Next Chapter: CJ & Scout
My parents got CJ, an Aussie, and he and Elle became great pals. Watching her interact with him — confident, relaxed, fully herself — confirmed everything.

Then in November 2024, I got Scout — CJ’s Aussie sister — and she stepped into this new chapter with me at Elle Woods.

The original vision was having both Scout and Elle with me. But life doesn’t always unfold according to vision boards — it unfolds according to what’s right.

Elle is happily living her best life as the queen of my parents’ house, with essentially 24/7 attention. I see her every week. She loves visiting. She does her walk-through inspection. And then she goes home — content.

And that’s how I know we made the right decision.

What Elle Woods Really Means Now
This house still carries her name.

But now it represents something deeper.

It represents growth. It represents choosing what’s best over what’s convenient. It represents understanding that love doesn’t mean ownership — it means stewardship.

Elle started this journey with me.

Scout is walking this new season with me.

And Elle? She’s exactly where she belongs — adored, secure, and completely herself. 🤍

It’s All Coming Together

July 15, 2025

This week felt like a major turning point.

The floors were installed, and I absolutely love how they turned out. I went back and forth on this decision so many times, but seeing them fully laid confirmed it was the right choice. There’s just enough contrast between the cabinets and the floors to make everything stand out without feeling too dark or too busy. The tones complement each other perfectly — warm, light, and inviting.

It’s amazing how much flooring changes a space. The house instantly feels bigger, warmer, and more finished. Walking from room to room now feels completely different. No more subfloor — real floors.

At the same time, light fixtures started going up. And wow… lighting makes such a difference. Once the pendants and fixtures were installed, each room suddenly had personality. When we turned everything on for the first time, it finally felt like a home instead of a construction site.

There are still details to finish, but this week was big. Seeing the floors down and the lights glowing made everything feel real.

Elle Woods is really coming together — and I couldn’t be happier with how she’s turning out.

So Close… Yet So Far

July 3, 2025

Well… I’m officially getting impatient.

It feels like it has been delays after delays lately. Just when I think we’re wrapping something up, another timeline shifts. I know this is part of building, and I keep reminding myself that in the grand scheme of things it will all be worth it… but whew. It has tested my patience.

The biggest holdup right now? My kitchen island cabinets.

Two. Months. On. Backorder.

You have got to be kidding me.

Of course it’s the island — the literal centerpiece of the kitchen. The one thing that ties everything together. The spot where everyone will gather. And it won’t be here in time.

So yes, I will be moving in before my island cabinets arrive. (Sigh.)

Not exactly how I pictured it, but at this point I just want to be in my house. I’m choosing to see it as “phase two” instead of a setback. The kitchen still looks beautiful, and I’m reminding myself that the island will eventually show up… even if it’s fashionably late.

On the bright side, every time I walk through the house now, I can actually see the finish line. The cabinets that are in look amazing. The two-tone choice still makes me so happy. The countertops, the lighting, the way the rooms flow together — it finally feels cohesive.

There’s something about this stage where it shifts from construction site to home. It’s subtle, but it’s happening.

And despite the stress and the waiting and the constant adjusting of expectations, I caught myself smiling in one of the photos — standing there with my dogs, in the house, finally seeing it all come together. That moment felt bigger than the backordered cabinets.

Slowly but surely, we are getting there.

The finish line is in sight… even if it’s taking the scenic route.

Cabinets & Siding — It’s a Big Week Over Here

June 19, 2025

This week feels BIG.

The cabinets are finally being installed and I truly could not be happier. After staring at empty spaces and trying to visualize layout and scale for months, seeing actual cabinetry go in feels surreal.

And yes… I went two-tone.

I debated it. I second-guessed it. I looked at a lot of inspiration photos. But in the end, I knew all white cabinets with white quartz countertops would feel a little too plain Jane for me. Classic? Yes. Safe? Definitely. But it just didn’t feel like me.

The two-tone adds depth and personality. It feels custom. It feels intentional. It feels unique — and as you know, I like to be different. I didn’t want to walk in and feel like I’d seen this exact kitchen a hundred times before. Now that they’re going in, I’m so glad I trusted my gut.

And if that wasn’t exciting enough…

THE SIDING IS ON.

I repeat. The siding. Is. On!!!
Seeing the exterior finished is such a turning point. It finally looks like a real house from the outside — not just a wrapped structure in progress. I absolutely love the color. I feel like you don’t see this shade very often, and that makes me love it even more.

I’ve never been one to choose the most common option in the lineup, and this was no exception. I wanted something that stood out in a subtle way. Something classic, but not overdone.

Because it’s a smaller home, I was very intentional about adding visual interest. We did board and batten on parts of the front and horizontal siding on other sections to break it up and give it dimension. I also chose different window designs to add character and make the exterior feel more dynamic.

When you’re working with a smaller footprint, details matter. Texture matters. Lines matter. I didn’t want it to feel flat — and I’m so happy with how it’s coming together.

For the first time, I can drive up and see the vision.

It’s different. It’s charming. It’s me.

And we’re getting so, so close.

It's Finally Starting to Feel Pretty

June 9, 2025
There is something about tile being finished that makes everything feel real.
The bathroom tile is officially done, and I can honestly say this is the moment I’ve been waiting for. For so long, it has been studs, wiring, plumbing, drywall dust, and decisions that felt more stressful than exciting. But now? Now I’m starting to see the pretty stuff come together.
And wow… it changes everything.

The bathroom feels finished in a way that framing and mechanicals never could. The texture, the color, the way the light hits it — it finally feels like a home instead of a construction site. After months of focusing on structural necessities, seeing something purely aesthetic go in is such a morale boost.

And speaking of “pretty”… can we talk about the garage door?
Yes, I am officially including the garage door in the pretty category. I absolutely love it. It adds so much character to the exterior, and seeing it installed made the house feel polished and intentional. It’s funny how something that is technically functional can completely elevate the look of the whole build.

Even more exciting — this is a pass-through garage. There’s another garage door on the back side, which will eventually open up to what I’m planning to use as a gym space. I love the idea of being able to open that back door during workouts, letting in fresh air and sunlight. It makes the space feel versatile and a little unexpected. I know that door is going to get a lot of use.
Of course, not every moment has been glamorous.

As you can probably see in the photo, I look a little tired. And that would be accurate. Building a home is such a gift, but it also comes with layers of stress that you don’t fully understand until you’re in it — timelines, decisions, budgets, inspections, coordinating trades… it’s a lot. There are days when it feels heavy.

But then there are moments that make it all worth it.
Like standing inside the house holding the pups while they explore. Watching them sniff every corner and trot around like they own the place completely melts me. They have no idea about budgets or delays or tile selections — they just know it’s new and exciting. Their happiness has been the sweetest reminder of why I’m doing this in the first place.
We are getting closer.

The house is starting to feel warm instead of raw. Finished instead of framed. Intentional instead of imagined.
And even though I’m tired, I’m also so incredibly grateful.

More soon. 💛

From Framing Fixes to Fresh Paint

May 6, 2025

Since my last update, things have been moving fast (finally!). The framing needed a few improvements, insulation went in, and then came drywall--panel by panel, taped and mudded. Watching the walls take shape was surreal... and now, we’ve officially hit the painting stage!
From the outside, the drywall process might seem simple--hang the panels, slap on some mud, and done, right? Not quite. It turns out drywall is weirdly delicate. The temperature has to be just right for the mudding and taping to set properly, so we had to bring in extra heaters to help things cure evenly. Who knew walls had such high-maintenance vibes?

We’ve opted for white paint throughout, and wow--what a difference. It instantly makes the space feel light, bright, and open. With the natural light bouncing off the fresh walls, it’s finally starting to feel like home. The transformation from a bare-bones structure to an actual home has been so rewarding to witness. I’ve attached some photo updates so you can see the progress with me. 🔨

If everything stays on track, I’m planning to move in during the second week of June. From purchasing the property back in 2021 to (almost) moving in four years later… it’s been a journey--longer than I ever imagined, but I am so ready.
Stay tuned for the next milestone--furnishings, finishes, and of course, the final walkthrough!

Oh, WELL!

March 11, 2025

Well, it finally happened—the well is dug. And what a journey that was! As most of you know, I'm building my home at the top of a hill, and while my neighbors have relatively manageable wells, mine turned into a completely different story. Initially, I budgeted for a modest 185-foot well. Turns out, wells are EXPENSIVE—at around $60+ per foot, every additional foot dug quickly adds up.

The well-drilling company was at my property for a full two weeks. Two weeks of absolute agony. Two weeks of stress, not knowing just how much my budget was about to explode. Two weeks spent mentally re-prioritizing and trying to figure out which parts of my new home I could defer to later when I might be able to afford them.

When those two weeks ended, reality hit hard—I now have a 505-foot deep well. That's DEEP! But, oh WELL, water is non-negotiable. Reflecting on this experience, I've definitely learned an essential lesson: always OVER-BUDGET for unpredictable expenses like well digging. Setting aside extra money for items with this much variability isn't just wise, it's essential.

Lesson learned. Now, onto the next challenge!

Lights, Plumbing, Action!

March 28, 2025
Major update! Plumbing and electrical are officially complete, and inspection passed! This was a significant milestone, marking huge progress on my build journey.

Next up: insulation and drywall! But before diving into the next stage, an essential tip I've learned: ALWAYS, always do a thorough walkthrough or two and cross-check against your blueprints. Seeing fixtures and recessed can light spots in person can reveal spacing issues or positioning that just doesn't feel right. During my walkthrough, I adjusted several fixtures and lighting placements. It’s also the perfect opportunity to ensure outlets and switches are conveniently placed, adding more where needed to make everyday life easier.

I'm super excited to share the next stages and progress photos with you soon! Stay tuned!

Windows!
February 4, 2025

Well, it’s been a minute since my last update! Over the past month, so much has happened—just not quite as fast as I’d like. (The joys of home building, right?) The most exciting update: the WINDOWS are in! YAY! There’s just something about seeing those windows installed that makes it all feel so real.

Another big milestone: the electrical panel has been installed. These small but essential steps are slowly bringing the vision to life.
This week, the plumbers are finishing up their work inside, and next up is the electrical wiring. After that, it’ll be time for insulation and then… drywall! EEEP!

Still crossing my fingers for a move-in date at the end of March, though realistically… we’ll see. Here’s to hoping! More updates soon!

Framing!

December 23, 2024
Exciting progress—we have the beginning parts of walls! In my post from 12/17/24, you could see the shell of the house starting to take shape. This past weekend, I visited the site again and could finally begin visualizing how the spaces will come together. One feature I’m particularly excited about is my garage, which will double as a gym, making it a truly functional space. I decided to install garage doors on both ends, which I think will be incredibly convenient, especially during the warmer months of spring and summer.

So far, my favorite part of the house is the large, uniquely designed front window. I can already picture myself sitting on the couch, enjoying the view—it’s going to be such a special spot!

The Beginning of The End

December 17, 2024
They say patience is a virtue, and this journey has definitely put that to the test! Before construction even began, I was assigned my address — N1331. For anyone who knows me, it’s no secret that I’m a big Taylor Swift fan, so seeing her iconic numbers reflected in my new address felt like a little nod from the universe. It was a fun and fitting way to kick off the building process!

October marked the start of breaking ground, followed by the installation of the mound system, inspections, foundation work, and, at last, framing during the first couple of weeks of December. It’s finally taking shape as a real house, and I couldn’t be more ecstatic! I may or may not find myself driving by daily just to catch a glimpse of the progress. As for a completion date — well, anyone familiar with home building knows those timelines are more of a suggestion than a guarantee. I’m beyond excited to share more photos as things continue to come together!

3 Years Later

August 9, 2024

August 2024 marks nearly three years since I purchased this special spot. When I started this vacant land and building process, I was naive, thinking everything would go smoothly, like a well-oiled machine. Three years later, there’s still no house on the ground. HA. However, the sanitary and zoning permits are acquired, and we’re awaiting the final building permit. There have been days filled with clearing, laughter, and bribes to get my brothers to help clear the land. I can't thank my dad enough for being the king of stump removal. Patience is something I feel I've nearly mastered.

My goal was to be in by Christmas 2024, but I won’t be naive again. Hopefully, by Spring 2025, you’ll see new house and decorating pictures here. In the meantime, enjoy a few snippets of my plans without revealing the final product. Here’s to the journey and all that has been learned so far.

The Journey to Financing My Dream Home: Lessons Learned from the Lending Process

March, 2024
In 2023, I embarked on a journey to design and build my dream home—a home that would reflect my personality, offer comfort, and remain within a reasonable budget. I partnered with an architect to craft a stunning design that I was genuinely excited about. The vision was set, the design was perfect, and I was ready to move forward.

But, as many people learn in the world of homebuilding, reality can hit hard. When I submitted my beautiful plans to three different builders for quotes, the feedback was not what I wanted to hear. Each builder came back with a quote that was double my original budget. Talk about a reality check. I had to make the difficult decision to go back to the drawing board, this time with a new perspective—and a new builder.

Scaling Back Without Sacrificing Vision
With a new builder, I reworked my home’s design. While I had to scale down the size, I would not compromise on the heart of the design. I wanted the house to feel unique, modern, and cozy all at once. To me, "modern cozy" means walking into a space that wraps you in a big, warm hug. The interior is designed with warmth and comfort in mind, while the exterior showcases bold modern lines, large windows, and a sleek, contemporary feel. The compromise on size didn’t feel like a loss—it felt like a chance to focus on the essence of what truly mattered to me.

The Lending Rollercoaster
Once my new design was finalized, it was time to face the next challenge: financing. I had tentative plans in hand and approached my first lender with high hopes. I’d worked with this lender during a prior real estate transaction, so I felt confident. Unfortunately, they delivered disappointing news—they were only willing to lend me 1/2 the amount I needed for my new home. I knew I had to explore other options.

The second lender’s offer was slightly better, but still not enough to make my dream a reality. At this point, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel like giving up. The stress was overwhelming, and I questioned if it would all be worth it.

Third Time’s the Charm
Finally, I decided to reach out to a lender recommended by the first lender who couldn’t meet my needs. This connection proved to be a game-changer. The third lender reviewed my finances thoroughly and confidently approved me for the amount I needed to build my home. The relief was instant. I finally had the green light to move forward, and for the first time in a long time, I felt hope.
Looking back, I’m grateful for the challenges I faced. Those struggles gave me firsthand experience in the lending process, and I’m now equipped to offer invaluable insight to my clients. I’ve walked the path—purchasing land, finding a lender, navigating a construction loan, and turning that loan into a mortgage. I’ve lived it, and that’s a perspective you can’t fake.

Key Takeaways for Future Homebuilders
  1. Equity in Land Can Be a Game-Changer One of the most valuable lessons I learned was that the equity in my land could be used as the down payment on my construction loan. This strategy saved me from having to come up with a large lump sum of cash, which was a lifesaver. For first-time homebuyers considering buying land, it’s worth exploring this option—it’s an approach that can make homeownership more accessible.
  2. The Loan Process Takes Time From the moment I began the process (speaking with lenders) to the day I closed on my construction loan, 60 days had passed. This time was necessary for the lender to review the construction plans and approve the financing. It’s not a quick process, so patience is essential.
  3. How a Construction Loan Works Unlike a traditional mortgage where you receive a lump sum, construction loans work differently. The lender doesn't give the builder all the money upfront. Instead, payments (called “draws”) are made in phases. In my case, the first draw went to the excavator. Each phase of construction must be inspected and approved before funds are released. This oversight ensures the money is being used as planned.
  4. Paying Interest, Not a Mortgage During the construction process, you’re not paying a full mortgage. Instead, you’re paying interest on the money that’s been drawn. While this sounds like a relief, it’s still a financial consideration, especially if construction drags on longer than expected. Knowing this upfront helped me plan my finances accordingly.
  5. Patience is Required—and Rewarded If you’re thinking about building a home, be prepared for the emotional ride. It’s stressful, overwhelming, and requires patience in abundance. But when you’re standing on the land that’s transformed into the home you’ve envisioned, every challenge suddenly makes sense.

What’s Next?
With my financing secured and construction underway, I’m now on the path to bringing my "modern cozy" dream to life. I’ll be sharing updates along the way, from land to finished home.

My hope is that my journey will offer inspiration and practical guidance to others considering a similar path. If you’ve ever dreamed of building a home or want to learn more about construction loans, using land equity as a down payment, or navigating the world of homebuilding, I’m happy to share my experience.

Staking Out "Elle Woods" Before the New Year

December 31, 2021
Walworth County's first proper snowfall came just before the new year. Four months had passed since becoming a landowner, and I felt that I needed to make my mark. A quick trip to Lowes for some wooden stakes, a few tools, and a gracious dad and I was set.

On New Year's Eve, my dad and I went to my property and put stakes in at all four corners. These stakes are just a part of "Elle Woods" transformation. Perhaps a few years from now, these stakes will be replaced with an inviting fence! Only time will tell...
